Drs. Nancy and Richard Bohannon
Dr. Richard A. Bohannon:
Former chief, Department of Medicine; CPMC-affiliated physician who retired (2000) from active medical practice; cancer consultant, oncology specialist; volunteer, St. Luke's; American Cancer Society's St. George Medal, highest honor for volunteers
Dr. Nancy Bohannon:
Director, clinical research, Cardiovascular Risk Reduction Program; St. Luke's. Private practice; practice-clinical research involves all aspects of diabetes, obesity, hypertension, lipid disorders; authored 70+ research papers; 80+ clinical trials during CPMC career
The Bohannons have been married for 36 years. The couple has set up a charitable remainder unitrust to provide tax advantages during their lifetimes and ultimately benefit CPMC—with separate gift legacies.
Their Fondest Memories as Physicians
Richard: "This was a 1972 event, while Nancy was an intern at Children's Hospital, and she and I took care of a 16-year-old young man, Michael Augello, for acute leukemia. He ended up getting a bone marrow transplant—the donor was his identical twin—after being referred to Dr. E. Donnall Thomas at the University of Washington, who received the Nobel Prize in 1990 with Joseph E. Murray for the development of cell and organ transplantation."
Nancy: "We became very close to the family through the years. Michael's parents are the godparents of our son, and we are the godparents of Michael's daughter."
The Difference They Each Hope to Make
Nancy: "My legacy gift is to support post-graduate training in diabetes at CPMC. What I like to think is that each person who has this training will go out and help hundreds more patients than I, as an individual doctor, can help. So it then multiplies and will improve care for a great number of people."
Richard: "My legacy bequest will help fund an honorary memorial lectureship for Dr. Ralph Wallerstein in the hematology and oncology disciplines. Dr. Wallerstein was a man of great integrity, and a true leader in the field of hematology and oncology and in the clinical care of patients. He died in May 2009."
"This bequest will assist CPMC in advancing as a leader on the cutting edge of the field of hematology and oncology, demonstrating its state-of-the-art care. The lectureship will be open to the medical profession so that specialists in the Bay Area are encouraged to hear world-class speakers disseminate information in the field."
Reasons for Supporting CPMC
Nancy: "I've been associated with CPMC in one way or the other during my entire career. Through the years, my husband, our son and I have all known and appreciated the excellent personal medical care that we have received here."
Richard: "This is truly a magnificent hospital. Recently, I came to appreciate even more the excellence of medical care here in all its dimensions. Last Thanksgiving, I fell and broke my hip playing golf in Mexico, and I was air transported to CPMC. After orthopedic surgery here, I was able to recover sufficiently to golf again in Mexico in a mere eight weeks! That is excellent care!"
